Chapter 56

Before dawn the next day, Pei Yuhuai’s backup phone started vibrating.

Pei Yuhuai got up and glanced at it, only to discover that the news of him stealing the serum formula had reached the other Nobles. They had arrived at the gates of Scarlet Town, seemingly intent on reclaiming the formula.

Pei Yuhuai immediately logged in. Before he could head to the town gates to confront the Nobles, the system issued a new task: to produce twenty doses of the Gene Serum.

The system provided a machine for crafting the Gene Serum, while the materials needed could be purchased from the in-game store using real money.

Upon completing this task, the system would reward him with ten thousand doses of the serum.

Seeing this reward, Pei Yuhuai became even more convinced of his earlier belief—the system was indeed striving to save this world.

Without hesitation, Pei Yuhuai spent real money to buy materials for a hundred doses and immediately produced them.

With so many Gene Serums in hand, the Mutants who had been loyal to the Nobles would easily switch sides to support Pei Yuhuai.

The reason Mutants were willing to serve the Nobles was for access to the Gene Serum and the resources the Nobles controlled.

Now that Pei Yuhuai had the serum and could also secure plenty of resources, the Mutants had more options.

When Pei Yuhuai arrived at the town gates with a hundred doses of the serum, several robots from the town were already in a standoff with the Nobles outside.

Leading the group were the heads of several financial conglomerates. Beside them stood an old man in a white lab coat.

Originally, Pei Yuhuai didn’t recognize the old man, but he noticed a nickname above his head.

The man was called “Professor Xu from the Research Institute,” and, amusingly, his name was displayed in red, much larger than the other Red Names.

This was too obvious—the man was like a game boss, with such a glaring Red Name that it was hard not to notice him.

Pei Yuhuai looked at the old man and asked, “Are you the professor who created the Virus and the Gene Serum?”

Hearing this, a flicker of confusion passed through the old man’s eyes.

Very few people knew his identity—only a handful of the financial conglomerate leaders were aware.

Could it be that Pei Yuhuai had learned about him from someone during the formula theft yesterday?

If he had known that person was so afraid of death, he wouldn’t have brought him into the investment.

Before the old man could ponder further, Pei Yuhuai turned to the Mutants standing beside them and said, “I have a lot of Gene Serum, and I can produce even more.”

This statement exploded like a bomb, leaving everyone stunned.

    What was the Gene Serum?

It was the lifeblood of the Nobles, the treasure that protected against the Virus.

It was the weakness that controlled the Mutants and the lifesaving drug that the Lower Class People desperately craved.

Just yesterday, Pei Yuhuai had obtained the formula, and today he claimed to have a large supply. It was simply unbelievable.

A townsperson couldn’t help but ask, “Mr. Pei, is what you’re saying true?”

Pei Yuhuai looked at the person who spoke and replied, “Yes, I stole their Gene Serum formula yesterday.”

The townsperson continued, “But… but resources are scarce now, and the materials for making the serum are rare. Even if you have the formula, how much serum can you actually produce?”

The townsperson was worried that even with the formula, Pei Yuhuai wouldn’t be able to produce enough serum.

In that case, having the formula in Pei Yuhuai’s hands wouldn’t be much different from it being in the Nobles’ hands.

If mass production wasn’t possible, the Gene Serum would still be out of reach for them.

Pei Yuhuai smiled and said, “The amount I have now is enough for everyone in town to receive an injection.”

At these words, the townspeople erupted in excitement.

Previously, they had thought Pei Yuhuai’s decision to provoke the Nobles was foolish. But now, seeing that he already had so much serum, they couldn’t help but feel that Pei Yuhuai was truly remarkable.

Pei Yuhuai had produced a hundred doses of the serum, and his new task was complete.

There were over three hundred people in the town, so Pei Yuhuai instructed Cheng Xiaowan and others to take a headcount.

After excluding those who had already used Ability Slots to become Ability users and those who had already received the serum, they would come up with a specific number and then come to him to collect the serum.

Hearing this, Cheng Xiaowan immediately left with a group of people, overjoyed.

In this world, Mutants gained their Abilities by being infected with the Virus. They needed to use the serum regularly to maintain their health.

However, those like Cheng Xiaowan, who had gained their Abilities through the Ability Slots provided by Pei Yuhuai, didn’t need to rely on the serum to survive.

These Ability users could resist the Virus and didn’t need to depend on the Gene Serum, so they didn’t require injections.

Pei Yuhuai had her take the headcount for two reasons: first, to ensure that everyone in town could receive the serum and no longer fear the zombie virus outside; second, to show the Nobles outside just how much serum he had as leverage.

Once they saw that he truly had a large supply, Pei Yuhuai wouldn’t even need to say anything—the Mutants would come to him on their own.

In fact, it happened even faster than Pei Yuhuai had anticipated. Before Cheng Xiaowan and the others returned, two Mutants approached him and asked, “If we choose to follow you, can you provide us with the serum?”

    “Yes.”

“Then… are there any special requirements?”

“I can provide you with the serum long-term. In the early stages, you’ll need to assist me and everyone else in clearing out the monsters. Once the world is free of monsters, in the later stages, you must not abuse your Abilities to bully or harm others. I can continue to provide you with the serum, and you can choose to become police officers or security guards.”

“You… you won’t force us to do things we don’t want to do, right?”

“No. In the future, if you don’t want to be police officers, as long as you stay law-abiding and don’t cause trouble, I can provide you with the serum for free.”

The two Mutants exchanged glances and then decisively walked over to Pei Yuhuai’s side.

Seeing this, the Nobles were furious. One of them attempted to shoot at the Mutants, but in the instant they fired, a Mutant blew their head off.

The other Mutants on the Nobles’ side also began to stir.

Some Nobles, sensing the situation was turning against them, tried to flee, while others attempted to kill or even defect to Pei Yuhuai’s side.

One Noble shouted, “If… if we support you now, can you guarantee that we won’t die?”

Pei Yuhuai replied, “As long as you weren’t the masterminds, I can guarantee you won’t die. Because in the future, there will no longer be a distinction between Nobles and Lower Class People.”

Hearing this, the Noble shakily glanced back at the others and then strode over to Pei Yuhuai’s side.

Some still tried to kill him, but with so many Mutants and Pei Yuhuai’s robots present, the defecting Noble safely entered the town.

Once the headcount in the town was complete and Pei Yuhuai actually produced the Gene Serum, the situation spiraled further out of control.

Since Pei Yuhuai had stated that only the masterminds would be killed, most of the Nobles began to defect.

This made the real masterminds feel the threat, and they started using weapons to create chaos, trying to drag the other Nobles down with them and make them think Pei Yuhuai would kill them all.

Seeing this, Pei Yuhuai directed his robots to charge into the chaotic crowd and apprehend the masterminds.

Among these masterminds were several individuals from other countries.

Once captured, they immediately confessed to Pei Yuhuai.

“The real mastermind isn’t us. We were just helping out. The true mastermind is a big shot from Country X. We were just collaborating with him.”

Pei Yuhuai asked the system about this, but the system didn’t answer his question. Instead, it enlarged and bolded their names, turning them into glaring Red Names.

The message was clear: even if they weren’t the main masterminds, they were still accomplices. These people had to be killed to stop them from causing further trouble.

And indeed, this was the case.

They didn’t have the capability to develop such a Virus on their own.

The Virus had come from a foreign big shot, but its subsequent development and spread had been led by them.

So they had to die. Only their deaths could bring peace to those who had already perished in the apocalypse.

Thus, on that day, a battle broke out at the town gates.

Led by the old man, several financial conglomerate Nobles were killed in the chaotic fight.

It wasn’t Pei Yuhuai who killed them—it was the Mutants who had learned the truth.

After killing them, the Mutants helped Pei Yuhuai clean up the mess.
