Chapter 55

The young boy’s understanding of Pei Yuhuai largely came from the internet.

The Inner City had internet access, but one needed a Noble identity code to go online.

Through live streams and forums, the boy had seen a lot about Pei Yuhuai.

He then discovered that Pei Yuhuai didn’t kill all Nobles; he only targeted those who enjoyed persecuting others.

The boy felt that he rarely bullied others and was indifferent to the Lower Class People, so he believed he wasn’t on Pei Yuhuai’s kill list. Thus, he didn’t fear Pei Yuhuai as much as other Nobles did.

The boy came from a fairly good family and was among the earlier batch to receive the Gene Serum.

Being young and rebellious, and having never experienced the harsh realities of society, his thoughts were somewhat naive and righteous.

It was precisely because of his personality that he often felt dissatisfied with their way of life.

He didn’t like the current state of the world. Even though he knew resources were dwindling, he would rather everyone disappear together than see people kill each other for the remaining resources.

His parents taught him to be kind, brave, strong, and just.

But he always felt that the actions of the Nobles weren’t very just.

So, to the boy, Pei Yuhuai’s appearance was like that of a savior.

Although Pei Yuhuai hadn’t saved him and might even pose a threat because he was a Noble, the boy had a feeling that Pei Yuhuai’s actions were right.

The moment the boy recognized Pei Yuhuai, he felt fear and instinctively wanted to turn and run.

But he quickly stopped himself. Looking at the exceptionally polite young man across from him, he decided to stay and have a proper conversation.

“Then, why do you help those Lower Class People?”

“I don’t deliberately help them, at least not those outside the city. The reason I help the people in the town is mainly because many of them were forced into their situations. Among them is my lover, who has endured things they shouldn’t have. That’s why I want to help them.”

“Then, now that the Nobles have disbanded the town’s game, and it won’t exist anymore, will you still target us Nobles?”

“Yes, because some of you Nobles are draining the pond to catch the fish. This won’t make your world better; on the contrary, it’s only accelerating its demise.”

Hearing this, the boy couldn’t help but frown.

“Then, what do you want to do? Kill all of us Nobles and use our resources to support those Lower Class People?”

Pei Yuhuai shook his head slightly at the boy’s somewhat naive words.

Killing all the Nobles would be no different from the Nobles killing all the Lower Class People.

The Lower Class People today aren’t necessarily much better than most Nobles.

Even if Pei Yuhuai helped them by killing all the Nobles, those resources wouldn’t sustain them for long.

Looking at the task issued by the system, Pei Yuhuai knew the system wanted to stop the killing.

Once he obtained the serum formula, and everyone had access to the Gene Serum, and no longer feared the Virus, people would have the energy, time, and manpower to address the issue of resource depletion.

Not all Nobles are good, and not all are bad. The same goes for the Lower Class People. Even if most of them are mediocre, there are still geniuses among them.

Pei Yuhuai believed that if the problem of resource depletion in this world were handed over to those geniuses, there might still be a chance for salvation.

“What I want to do can’t be easily explained to a child like you. But don’t be afraid; I’ll try not to kill and won’t harm you arbitrarily.”

After saying this, Pei Yuhuai prepared to leave.

Seeing this, the boy quickly caught up, looking curious and eager to help.

“I, I don’t know if I can be of any help, but would you like to explain it to me in detail?”

Under normal circumstances, being on opposite sides, one wouldn’t trust a child or say much to them.

But Pei Yuhuai, looking at the boy in front of him, inexplicably said a few more words.

“I first need to know who developed the zombie virus.”

“And then? Do you want to expose them or kill them?”

“They are the culprits behind this apocalypse and have gained much from it. They should be held accountable for their actions.”

Pei Yuhuai expected the boy to back off after hearing this.

But to his surprise, the boy spoke up, “Then, if I can help you, can you promise me one thing?”

    “What is it?”

“I want to have an Ability, not to kill or to vie for power. The reason I want an Ability is to ensure that most people won’t be killed once the Nobles no longer hold power.”

Yes, once the Nobles lose their power.

The Mutants and Lower Class People will definitely not spare them.

Even if many of them just went with the flow, in the eyes of some Lower Class People, they are no different from those who developed the virus.

The boy pitied the Lower Class People but also feared a reversal where his relatives and friends would become the next “Lower Class People.”

“You’re just a child. What do you think you can help me with?”

“I, I know who developed the virus. That should be of great help to you, right?”

Actually, many Nobles in the Inner City knew about the development of the virus.

But unlike the boy, they wouldn’t necessarily tell Pei Yuhuai.

If Pei Yuhuai wanted to find out, he would need to spend a lot of time investigating.

But if Pei Yuhuai was willing to cooperate with the boy, the boy could save him a lot of time.

In the end, the two reached an agreement: Pei Yuhuai would give the boy a Lightning-based Ability, and the boy would help him find the people who developed the virus.

The people who developed the virus weren’t a single family but a consortium of several wealthy families who invested in a secret research institute.

Many people from this institute had already died.

Among them were middle and lower-class individuals who were silenced early in the apocalypse.

Now, only a few people from the institute and the heads of a few wealthy families knew about the virus and the Gene Serum formula.

The boy happened to know which family was involved.

He knew this because of his father, who loved to drink. Once, when his father was drunk, he accidentally let slip a few things.

The boy told Pei Yuhuai the information, and that very night, Pei Yuhuai went to “rob” that family.

Pei Yuhuai didn’t kill indiscriminately; he only fought back when someone attacked him.

His Ability level was high, his Ability cooldown was short, and he had Immortality.

Dealing with a wealthy family was quite simple.

So that night, Pei Yuhuai easily entered their home, killed a few guards who shot at him, and found several safes.

These safes didn’t contain the serum formula he was looking for, but he did find virus samples.

Since he didn’t find what he wanted in their home, Pei Yuhuai went to find the family head.

Such people usually value their lives highly. The less they care about others’ lives, the more they care about their own.

Pei Yuhuai simply held a gun to his forehead, and to save himself, the man told him everything.

The formula was kept in a basement.

He gave the formula to Pei Yuhuai and begged him to spare him and his family.

Since they weren’t the masterminds, Pei Yuhuai didn’t kill him.

Successfully obtaining the formula and learning the true mastermind behind it all, Pei Yuhuai completed his new main quest.

Just then, it was already very late.

Lin Mian returned from outside and urged him to wash up and rest.

After Pei Yuhuai logged off from the game, Lin Mian dragged him to wash up.

Lin Mian asked him about the current state of that world.

Pei Yuhuai briefly replied, “I’ve obtained the serum formula. If all goes well, it can be developed soon. Once everyone is injected, they can eat the meat of mutated beasts and the fruits and vegetables from mutated plants.”

Hearing this, Lin Mian breathed a sigh of relief, “That’s great. Once everyone is no longer afraid of the virus, the zombies and such will naturally disappear quickly.”

“Yes, I plan to log in tomorrow and see. If we can develop it quickly, we can get married by the end of the month.”

Now that their new home was ready and Lin Mian had been looking forward to their wedding, Pei Yuhuai felt there was no need to wait any longer.

Getting married sooner would ease Lin Mian’s mind and his family’s as well.
