ARBW Chapter 10
by CasualMTLAfter finishing the gift pack, Pei Yuhuai logged off directly.
He didn’t take the words of the town organizer to heart; after all, to him, this was just a small game, and the town organizer was merely a minor boss in his eyes.
No player cares about what a game boss has to say. The words of a red-named character in the game are even less likely to be taken seriously.
After that, Pei Yuhuai didn’t log back in until noon the next day when he finally had time to play.
The next day was Friday. He had two meetings in the morning, but nothing scheduled for the afternoon.
With the weekend following, Pei Yuhuai planned to return to his parents’ home to rest, giving him plenty of leisure time.
At noon, he sat in the car, intending to log in on the way home to increase the favorability of the town’s residents.
Unexpectedly, as soon as he logged in, a gunshot rang out in the game.
In the entire town, only Lin Mian had a gun, so the shot must have come from him.
Although Pei Yuhuai wasn’t very familiar with Lin Mian, he found Lin Mian to be quite obedient, like a quiet and beautiful rabbit.
With such a personality, he wouldn’t initiate an attack. Unless provoked repeatedly, he would never fire his weapon.
Pei Yuhuai controlled his character on the phone and headed toward the direction of the gunshot.
As he rushed over, Lin Mian was sternly staring at a group of people in front of him, saying, “This is a warning to you. If you continue to cause trouble, the next gunshot will be your heads exploding.”
Song Yuli, hearing this, retorted defiantly, “Why should we listen to you? This is Mr. Pei’s territory, not yours, Lin Mian. What right do you have to control us?”
The others who were causing trouble alongside Song Yuli couldn’t help but chime in.
“Yeah, why should we? You can’t represent Mr. Pei, and besides, we don’t even know where Mr. Pei is or when he’ll be back. We’re starving, of course, we have to take food from here.”
“Exactly! We could have earned food through live streaming. Now look, thanks to Mr. Pei, we’re all struggling to survive. If this is his territory, he should be responsible for us; otherwise, he doesn’t deserve to be the Boss here.”
“Right, right! We just want to survive. Until he returns, we’re taking what belongs to us.”
…
Cheng Xiaowan, Lin Mian’s roommate, couldn’t help but anxiously say, “You can’t come in! We don’t have much food left either. If you take our food, what will we do?”
Song Yuli sneered at her words, “You? Don’t you deserve it? If it weren’t for you all causing trouble for Mr. Pei, we wouldn’t be in this situation. We won’t care about your lives; you brought this on yourselves.”
With that, Song Yuli intended to lead the group to force their way in.
They were truly starving and didn’t care about the gun in Lin Mian’s hand.
Moreover, Lin Mian only had one handgun, and it likely didn’t have many bullets.
Between being shot dead and starving to death, they dared to bet that Lin Mian wouldn’t shoot them.
Lin Mian indeed didn’t dare to shoot. To be honest, these people weren’t entirely wrong; everyone just wanted to survive.
He couldn’t just kill people recklessly because he had a gun. Besides, with few bullets, if he fired, it would only infuriate the crowd.
At that point, the enraged mob would pounce on him and tear him apart before he ran out of bullets.
However, while he didn’t dare to shoot, there was someone who did.
That person was none other than the late-arriving Pei Yuhuai.
As soon as he arrived, he saw Song Yuli leading the group in chaos.
To prevent the situation from escalating, he shot Song Yuli in the leg.
The shot didn’t take his life but broke his leg, instantly pausing the chaotic scene as if someone had pressed the pause button.
Everyone, regardless of which side they were on, fell silent.
Cheng Xiaowan, upon seeing Pei Yuhuai, immediately ran toward him with a beaming face.
She smiled and said, “Great! Mr. Pei, you’re finally here. If you hadn’t come, this place would have turned into chaos.”
Pei Yuhuai glanced at her and chose to engage in conversation, asking what had happened today.
Cheng Xiaowan trusted and admired him greatly; she answered his questions obediently, quickly clarifying what had just occurred.
When Pei Yuhuai heard that they needed food and water, he was momentarily taken aback.
To him, they were just a string of data, and after he rescued them, they should have been free.
Unexpectedly, he realized that physical rescue wasn’t enough; he also had to take care of their food and living needs.
To be honest, he didn’t want to concern himself with their lives, especially those troublemaking NPCs.
They had previously distrusted Pei Yuhuai and caused Lin Mian and the others a lot of trouble. Such people wouldn’t settle down and might cause even more chaos.
But seeing many of them looking at him with genuine fear, as if they truly had lives, Pei Yuhuai found it hard to act.
Thinking about how killing NPCs other than red names would incur negative buffs in the game, he suppressed the thought of killing them.
He looked at them coldly and said, “I don’t like trouble. I hope such farces as today won’t happen again. As for your need for food, I will find a way to solve it. But there’s one condition: if you stay here, you must live honestly. Don’t cause trouble, don’t make noise, and don’t bring me any issues.”
A woman, recalling that Pei Yuhuai was relatively gentlemanly toward women, boldly asked, “Then, what if we need something? Like medicine?”
She had a son whose health was poor. Her boldness in asking stemmed not only from knowing Pei Yuhuai’s character but also from her concern for her frail child.
She worried that if her child needed medicine, what would they do?
Before Pei Yuhuai could respond, a time-limited quest appeared on his phone’s task panel.
The content of the time-limited quest was: Satisfy the requests of ten town residents within a day.
Residents could write their requests for Pei Yuhuai on the bulletin board in the town square.
Players needed to complete ten requests from these within a day.
Upon completion, the player would receive a ton of rice.
Pei Yuhuai read the time-limited quest carefully and realized that such tasks would appear daily, allowing him to obtain food or water through them.
With food and water, the residents living in the town could survive peacefully.
Seeing this, Pei Yuhuai addressed everyone present, “If you need my help, you can write it on the bulletin board in the square. I will fulfill ten requests daily, including food, water, medicine, and so on.”
At first, the crowd didn’t quite understand, but later, when Pei Yuhuai led them to the bulletin board and personally had someone write down their request, they gradually caught on.
Many felt it unnecessary to go through such trouble; why not just have Pei Yuhuai give them what they needed directly?
However, since Pei Yuhuai had shot and injured someone without hesitation, they felt a bit intimidated by him.
Moreover, when Lin Mian took the lead in following Pei Yuhuai’s instructions, many worried they might miss out on the opportunity to obtain supplies, so they quickly complied.
There were over a hundred people in their town, and most wrote down requests, causing the bulletin board to be filled with notes.
Pei Yuhuai stepped forward and found Lin Mian’s note among the many.
Lin Mian had written it without much thought, intending to set an example.
Seeing Pei Yuhuai find his note first, Lin Mian couldn’t help but feel nervous.
His note read, “Sorry to trouble you, Mr. Pei. I would like a bottle of clean water.”
Pei Yuhuai accepted this request from the resident and then pulled a bottle of mineral water from his backpack.
As he handed the mineral water to Lin Mian, he completed the next resident request.
At the same time, his time-limited task updated to (10/1), with nine more to go.
The crowd saw that Pei Yuhuai was genuinely giving out items, and for a moment, they didn’t care whether it was strange for him to ask them to do this; they just wanted him to look at their written requests. A group of people surrounded Pei Yuhuai, chattering excitedly.
Pei Yuhuai disliked the noise, and to avoid hearing their clamor, he turned and opened the bulletin board in front of him.
As the bulletin board opened on his phone, the surrounding sounds were instantly muted.
Pei Yuhuai scanned through the requests and accepted a few simple ones.
For him, the easiest requests to fulfill were delivering supplies.
The second request he accepted was from the woman who had previously asked about medicine.
From Lin Mian’s perspective, the bulletin board was filled with small notes bearing names.
From Pei Yuhuai’s view, these notes not only had names but also personal avatars of the town residents.
So even if Pei Yuhuai didn’t know the woman’s name, he could recognize her at a glance from her avatar.
She needed fever medicine; her son was in poor health and easily caught colds and fevers.
Coincidentally, Pei Yuhuai had fever medicine on hand, so he accepted her request.
Medicine had always been a scarce commodity in the apocalypse, and when she wrote down her need for fever medicine, she was hoping for a miracle.
Unexpectedly, Pei Yuhuai provided her with the fever medicine as his second request.
The woman stood there, stunned, holding the medicine, momentarily at a loss for words.
It wasn’t until Pei Yuhuai moved on to the third request that she finally came to her senses and pulled her son over to thank him.
